Shawdesh DEsk: At least eight people were killed and many others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sirajganj, Barguna and Chapainawabganj on Thursday.
In Dhaka, an elderly man was killed after being hit by a passenger bus at Asadgate area in the capital.
The deceased was identified as Ashraf Uddin Dewan, 65, hailing from Khalpar village of Gajaria upazila in Munshiganj.
Tania Akter, daughter of the deceased, said that the passenger bus of Projapati Paribahan hit him in the area at 9:00 am while he was going to office, leaving him injured.
Later, locals took the injured to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where doctor referred him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) as his condition deteriorated.
But doctors of the DMCH declared him dead on arrival.
Confirming the news, Sujan Biswas, sub-inspector of Sher-e-Banglanagar Police Station, said police seized the killer bus but its driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy, the SI added.
In Mymensingh, three people, including the auto-rickshaw driver, were killed as a truck crashed into an auto-rickshaw on Mymensingh-Fulpur Highway at Shashar Bazar area of Tarakanda upazila in Mymensingh .
One of the deceased was identified as Rubel Mia, 23, was a driver of auto-rickshaw, hailing from Autdar village of the upazila while identities of the others deceased could not be known immediately.
Confirming the news, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tarakanda Police Station, said the Haluaghat-bound truck rammed the Mymensingh-bound auto-rickshaw in the area at 9:00 am, leaving two passengers of the auto-rickshaw and its driver dead on the spot.
In Sirajganj, a driver and his helper were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on-collision between a passenger bus and a truck on Hatikumrul-Banpara Highway at Harinchar area on Salanga upazila in Sirajganj.
The deceased were identified as Raju Ahmmed, 28, a truck driver, hailing from Dhakur village of Nandigram upazila in Bagura and Hamjal Rani, 22, a helper, son of Khokon Ali, from Kundarhat village of the upazila.
Sadikul Islam, sub-inspector of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, said that the Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Shyamoli Paribahan collided head-on with the Rajshahi-bound truck in the area this morning, leaving the driver of the truck dead on the spot and 11 others injured.
Later, the helper died on way to hospital.
The OC, on information, said members of fire service and police rescued the injured and brought to different hospital, adding that police seized the bus and the truck and a process is underway to file a case in this connection.
In Barguna, a fish trader was killed in a road accident on Amtali-Patuakhali regional highway of Amtali upazila in Patuakhali.
The deceased was identified as Jasim, 32, of the same area.
Quoting locals that a motorcycle on which Jashim was riding to go to Kuakata at once fell down from his vehicle as he lost control over the steering in the area at 6:00 am, leaving him injured.
Later, he died on the way to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital.
Md Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Amtali Police Station, confirmed the matter.
In Chapainawabganj, a housewife was killed in a road accident at Bashbaria area on Nejampur-Hatbakail road of Nachol upazila in Chapainawabganj.
The deceased was identified as Shiuly Begum, 30, wife of Majibar Rahman, hailing from Chalk-Nejampur village of the upazila.
According to locals sources, that a tractor hit a motorcycle on which Majibar and his wife Shiuly were riding to go to in the area at 12:00 pm, leaving Shiuly dead on the spot.
Selim Reza, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nachol Police Station, confirmed the matter.
